While working at Cote & Giblin, she met Nathan Spencer, a law clerk. They started dating and were married after two years of courtship. She then worked as a nurse practitioner for several years before becoming a certified nurse midwife in 2001.

Cynthia went to an all-girls Catholic high school. After high school, she attended the University of Notre Dame, majoring in English. Cynthia Davis Spencer dreamed of becoming a reporter at first but then switched her major to English after realizing that it would be difficult for female reporters to succeed. In 1978, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Notre Dame.
Cynthia Davis spencer had been dating a guy named Steven Spencer for four years when she graduated from college. They were engaged after she graduated from college and married in July 1978. They moved to New York City together because he got a job at an advertising agency there. In New York City, they had two children: Robert Jr., who was born in 1981, and Christina, who was born two years later. Their third child David was born almost eight years later in 1989.
