Guyana Warriors
The Guyana Amazon Warriors were crowned champions of the Caribbean Premier League for the first time with a nine-wicket win over Trinbago Knight Riders in the final at Providence on Sunday. The Warriors won the toss and elected to bowl first, and produced a disciplined performance to restrict the Knight Riders to just 94 all out. The pick of the bowlers was Dwaine Pretorius who took four wickets while Imran Tahir and Gudakesh Motie also shared two wickets. The Warriors chased the target with ease and victory was secured in 14 overs. Shai Hope and Saim Ayub both reached their half centuries, while Keacy Carty was the top scorer for the Knight Riders with 38 runs.
The final was a sell-out affair and the sold-out crowd enjoyed an entertaining evening of cricket. The audience was entertained with a wide variety of music and dancers while they waved the Warriors flags all night long. The crowd cheered every time the Warriors made a breakthrough and clapped when they wrapped up the game in style.
Trinbago Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard was disappointed with the result of the game but was confident that his team would return next season. He also congratulated the Amazon Warriors for their victory. “Guyana deserved it more tonight, they played consistently throughout the tournament,” he said. “I am confident that we will come back stronger in 2024.”
Defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs will look to get their season off to a flying start when they face Guyana Amazon Warriors at Brian Lara Cricket Academy on August 18. The teams are the only two sides who have not lost in the tournament thus far, with both winning their opening games.
The Guyana Amazon Warriors finished second in the 2013 Caribbean Premier League after losing to Stars in the final. Since then, they have competed in each edition of the competition and finished second in 2014, 2016 and 2018 as well as third in 2015 and 2017. They are currently playing in their fourth consecutive CPL semi-final. They defeated St Lucia Zouks by five wickets to reach the final of this year’s tournament.
Kieron Pollard
Kieron Pollard is a highly aggressive batsman who relies on hitting the ball out of the park. He has a very high strike rate but is not good against spinners. He is also a brilliant fielder who can take some amazing catches. His height and long reach mean he can field anywhere on the ground. He has a good chance of making a comeback to international cricket in 2022.
In 2006, Pollard made his debut for Trinidad and Tobago in the Stanford Twenty20 competition against the Cayman Islands. His performance impressed the selectors, and he was selected to play in the semi-final against Nevis. In this match, Pollard scored 83 runs off 38 balls, including seven sixes to secure Trinidad and Tobago’s place in the final. This performance earned him the man of the match award.
After his impressive display in franchise cricket, Pollard was recalled to the West Indies squad for the 2007 World Cup. He made his ODI debut in the first game against South Africa, but did not pick up a wicket with the ball. He came into the limelight in the next match against India, scoring a superb century and helping the Windies to a remarkable victory.
Pollard continued to impress in the limited-overs format, and he led the Barbados Tridents to the 2014 CPL title. In the same year, he was named the captain of the West Indies team in limited-overs cricket, replacing Carlos Brathwaite and Jason Holder. Sammy took over the Test and one-day captaincy in 2010 after Chris Gayle was dropped. During his time as skipper, Sammy won a number of Man of the Match awards and made some crucial contributions with both the bat and ball. However, he was not the most consistent batsman and often struggled to make an impact in long innings.
Despite his inconsistencies, Sammy became West Indies’ all-time leading run scorer in ODIs and T20s. He also helped the side win the 2012 and 2016 World T20s. The Beausejour Cricket Ground in St Lucia was renamed after him to mark his contribution. However, four months after the 2016 T20 World Cup, Sammy was informed that he did not merit a place in the national side and Carlos Brathwaite was appointed as his replacement.
Although Sammy’s career in international cricket ended with the retirement of Darren Bravo and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, he continued to play franchise T20 cricket. He played for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Hobart Hurricanes, Royal Challengers Bangalore and later for a number of other teams. He has also captained the Sri Lankan and Pakistani franchises.
In the final days of his international career, Sammy was involved in a bitter pay dispute with the West Indies board. This led to the players boycotting the tour of Bangladesh and he was forced to lead an under-strength team to the series. In the series, he was criticised for his dull captaincy and lost his Test captaincy to Denesh Ramdin. However, he continued to play for franchise T20 teams and led Peshawar Zalmi to the PSL title in 2017 and Rajshahi Kings in 2022.
Nikita Miller
After being snubbed by the international selectors for almost three years, left-arm spinner Nikita Miller is determined to hit the ground running in the cut and thrust of the Regional Four-Day Championship. The 35 year old was a surprise inclusion in the squad for the three-match series in New Zealand and has been inspired by his return to the fold.
He was a key member of the Jamaica Scorpions team that won the CG United Super50 title earlier this month and says that strategic planning by the Jamaica Cricket Board built an “exceptional team.” This was achieved by placing emphasis on a player-centric approach, which allowed for players to develop at their own pace.
The 32-year-old also stressed that it wouldn’t be a ‘Nikita Miller show’ in the upcoming tournament, but instead a Jamaica team show. He added that he welcomes advice from regular four-day captain Tamar Lambert and is ready to take on the challenge of leading Jamaica in 50-over cricket. Miller began his career in Germany as a cartoonist and illustrator. He studied Mediainformatik at the Hochschule der Medien in Stuttgart, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree. His hobbies include drawing and writing philosophic and societally critical comics and short stories.
